Westside Notes

“If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.”
                                                     — Pema Chodron

Welcome to the Winter edition of Westside Notes. As the New Year and the new decade begin, I’m aware of the many challenges so many of us faced last year. I recently took a look at my high school yearbook, and next to my senior photo was the quote the best is yet to come which I chose at the time. I suppose there may be some truth to that quote, but the best is also available everyday of our lives if we remain mindful to it.

Article (Chart) of the Month
Healthy Love vs. Not-So-Healthy Love

Because many of my clients struggle with relationships and intimacy, I’ve compiled some ideas from Pia Mellody to highlight a few distinctions between healthy and not-so-healthy (aka addictive) relationships. Click here.

Conference in Review
The Evolution of Psychotherapy
(Anaheim — December 2009)

For those of you not familiar with this conference, it’s held every 5 years, and it brings together some of the masters of the field with approximately 7000 people in attendance. Despite the immensity of the crowds, the highlights of the event included Kaye Jamison (keynote about her memoir, An Unquiet Mind), Harriet Lerner (keynote about shame), and Martin Seligman (Positive Psychology). It’s a lot to digest in a short amount of time, but it’s a rare treat to see so many of the pioneers of the field together in one place.
