Westside Notes

“We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.”    — Joseph Campbell

Welcome to the Winter edition of Westside Notes. As we enter into this time of tremendous transition in our country, I’ve also experienced some recent changes in my practice as well as a personal loss described in the article below. Because transitions present us with challenges and opportunities for growth and deepening, I invite you to welcome the transformative possibilities unfolding in this next chapter.

Article of the Month

The Gratitude of Tragedy

Last November we lost a magnificent retreat house in Santa Barbara called Mount Calvary which was destroyed in the Montecito fire. Because it was an integral part of my California experience, I find myself continuing to grieve the tremendous loss of this healing sanctuary. The following article is not only a tribute to Mount Calvary but also a plea for donations for the displaced Benedictine monks who have been so embracing of 12-step fellowships through the years.

It was a Friday morning this past November. Listening with half an ear to the morning news I overheard that wildfires had broken out once again in Southern California—my home for the past 20 years.

Changing of the Guard

John Chebultz has been a terrific part of my practice for the past two and a half years and he recently passed his exams and is now a licensed marriage and family therapist. Its been such a privilege to see him grow both personally and professionally as he crosses this passage.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind you that my other talented intern, Blair Smith, M.A. is accepting referrals and currently has a few evening openings as well as a sliding scale.

Recovery Coaching News

As many of you know, I’ve been very involved in spreading the word about Recovery Coaching for several years now, and it’s become clear that we need to take our work to the next level by developing outcome studies and evidence-based research to demonstrate how coaching benefits those in the first year of recovery. My colleagues Linda Landon, Pat Moomey and I have developed a Recovery Coaching Pilot Project to do just that. As it rolls out this Spring with our local sober living programs, I’ll update you on our progress, and our vision is to use it as a launching pad for additional projects and training.

If you prefer not to receive future mailings, simply unsubscribe below and I look forward to connecting in other ways.

Warmly,

Andrew
